Because we can't stand the thought of being "bored"?

I think that a lot of people are unfulfilled (especially since we're surrounded by a bunch of material things and commercials suggesting we always need more). That feeling of not being satisfied with one's own life, not wanting to (or not knowing how to) become more satisfied through one's own actions, can lead someone to look for cheap entertainment. Drama IRL is free, monetarily speaking.

Also, when things seem boring, such as meditation can be to those who hustle and haven't tried it before, emotions and thoughts come up that they have been avoiding through all their busy work. Constantly looking at other people's drama (or creating your own) can be an avoidance tactic.

Ah yes, if one fork is good then ten forks must be better! Never mind that you only need one to eat with!

Yes, drama is free in a monetary sense, but it has an emotional cost. A little is good, it makes us feel alive and engaged. But like oxidation and anti-oxidants, our bodies need both, true health comes from balance.
